Reconstruyendo el pasado a través del análisis genético de textiles de origen vegetal

Este artículo presenta una visión general de la importancia cultural, a nivel global, de especies vegetales utilizadas como fuentes de fibra para la elaboración de textiles. La familia de las moraceae incluye diversas especies menos conocidas utilizadas para la fabricación de textiles. Las nuevas herramientas genéticas permiten estudiar objetos elaborados con materiales provenientes de organismos vivos para indagar el pasado, incluyendo a los textiles. El artículo resume los resultados de una investigación interdisciplinar de una década sobre la morera de papel de islas del Pacífico. Nuestro trabajo se ha centrado en el estudio de las plantas y textiles de la morera de papel (Broussonetia papyrifera) mediante el análisis genético para responder a interrogantes relacionadas con los procesos de poblamiento de Oceanía insular.
