Abstract

Introduction: labor is a complex and emotional experience, where proper pain management allows for a humanized experience, respecting the woman's expectations. Currently, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods are used to alleviate pain.

Objective: to analyze the benefits of using non-pharmacological methods for pain relief in women during labor.

Methodology: this is a narrative review conducted in databases such as Scielo, Cochrane Library, Scopus, PubMed, and Lilacs, using terms like "Labor", "Complementary therapies", "Pain management", and "Labor pain". The focus was on studies published between 2018 and 2022, in Spanish, English, and Portuguese.

Results and discussion: non-pharmacological methods have been shown to be effective in reducing pain by promoting the release of β-endorphins and decreasing stress and anxiety, thus improving the childbirth experience, satisfaction, and sense of control.

Conclusions: non-pharmacological methods, such as music therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, acupressure, reflexology, and relaxation techniques, offer benefits in pain management during labor. They promote empowerment and autonomy for women, adapting to the stages of labor to contribute to satisfactory and humanized experiences.
