The design and implementation of AI systems have gained ground in the public debate in recent years due to this technology's potential to transform society radically. The public sector is no exception. Voices from academia and the professional world have been interested in analyzing the impact of AI on public organizations and the provision of public services. How do governments and public administrations conceive of AI concerning a particular aspect that has also generated concern: the gender dimension? This article answers this question based on an exploratory analysis of the national AI strategies of Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Colombia, and Chile. It uses an analytical framework that combines dimensions related to IA in the public sector and implicit and explicit references to gender. The results show a concern, at least discursively, to incorporate the gender dimension directly or indirectly in developing AI systems. Still, this perspective needs to be further concretized from a practical point of view.
