Introduction: it’s estimated that at least 150 million men worldwide suffer from erectile dysfunction that affects their quality of life. The objective of this research was to know the effectiveness and adverse effects of treatments for erectile dysfunction due to vascular damage.
Methodology: systematic bibliographic review. WOS, Scopus, SciELO, PubMed, and LILACS were searched from 2012 to June 2023. The variables were human treatments, erectile dysfunction and blood vessels, MeSH, DeCS, and free key terms; Erectile dysfunction, pharmaceutical preparations, phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors, blood vessels, arteries, treatment outcome, humans, combining with Boolean operators.
Results: tadalafil, sindenafil and verdanafil, the use of alprostadil, herbal preparations in oral presentation, the placement of stents with zotarolimus/sirolimus showed statistically significant improvement in erectile dysfunction due to vascular damage in the corpora cavernosa tissue. The use of nebivolol in combination with phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors demonstrated improvement in the relaxation mechanism for penile erection. Internal pudendal artery angioplasty did not show significant differences in the improvement of erectile dysfunction.
Conclusion: phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors, alprostadil, nebivolol, herbal preparations, and stenting proved to be safe and effective treatments in patients with erectile dysfunction with vascular pathology. The high rates of cardiovascular diseases make it necessary for the midwife to reconsider the challenge of taking sexual care beyond gender.
