Abstract

Introduction: Pregnancy represents a stage of great physiological changes for women, highlighting those occurring at the physical and psychological level, making the mother more vulnerable and in great need of emotional support.

Objective: Analyze the relationship between utero exposure to antidepressants and mental health problems in children’s born between 2015 and 2021 treated in public health centers of southeast metropolitan Chilean health service.

Methods: A quantitative, observational, retrospective and longitudinal study of cases and controls was carried out, where the population consisted of 89,554 children. The exposure to be studied was their mothers' consumption of some type of antidepressant during pregnancy.

Results: Of the children exposed to any antidepressant medication during pregnancy, 35% have some mental health diagnosis and children who were not exposed to any antidepressant medication during pregnancy, 29% have some mental health diagnosis.

Conclusion: There are several factors that can influence the mental health of children, not only in utero exposure to some type of antidepressant. Therefore, it is necessary to generate other statistical studies that can give a better correlation between factors and mental health diagnoses in early childhood. No significant relationship was found between in utero exposure to antidepressants and mental health problems in children in their first years of life (OR 1.3 with 95% confidence interval).
